| Charlottesville is a metropolitan area with a population of about 130,000 (including surrounding Albemarle County) in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, approximately 110 miles southwest of Washington, D.C., and 70 miles west of Richmond. Twenty-one miles to the west are Skyline Drive and the Shenandoah National Park. The beautiful surroundings and historic sites in the region promote a vigorous tourist industry which brings over $100 million/year to the local economy. |

While the surrounding area is largely rural, Charlottesville itself supports a variety of businesses and services, including light industry and research and development plants. The city caters to diverse tastes and offers a wide range of activities: nightclubs, restaurants, parks, theaters, and music venues which attract nationally recognized musicians. It is home to the annual Virginia Festival of American Film which includes screening of many films in their debut and events involving highly regarded filmmakers and actors. Charlottesville was home to two past United States Presidents, Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe. Their residences, Monticello and Ash Lawn Highland, are nearby and open to the public. Montpelier, the home of President James Madison, is located on 2700 acres in nearby Orange County and is also open to the public. |
